Nicaragua is a Central American country with devout religious beliefs machista way of life, and almost nonexistent television industry. How on earth do you succeed in an environment like this with a telenovela about AIDS, homosexuality and violence against women. Virgina Lacayo and Liz Miller supply the answer in depth interview on the subject, but in a nutshell, youth is the motor behind this incredibly moving film piece.

Just take a look at their website www.puntos.org.ni/novela and you will come across a very energetic, young and dynamic visual of what this telenovela is all about. It is a telenovela with a conscience. The message is "take control of your lives", targeted to young people and message is delivered by young people, too.

Liz Miller, the director of the documentary of the making of, called Novela Novela, talked with us for a while and described in detail the metamorphosis of reaching the goal of a television program. According to Liz, this all started with Punto de Encuentro in 1990, an organization created to influence the general population through all kinds of media in name of human rights. They started with Boletina, a women’s newsletter and today the largest distributed publication in Nicaragua. A radio program came in 1992 called Radio Joven sin Nombre and three years later, in 1995 Sexto Sentido, the latest success story was born.

Liz and her friend María both shared a very intimate and important moment in that Puerto Rican José González (Sueño del Yunque) composed and donated the music used for the documentary. In Liz’s words, "the Puerto Rican connection had to be included". In the making of the documentary she comes across the conservative sector of the population who opposes the project, but at the same time, tells us of how the public has embraced the program, its characters and the taboo subject matter, such as homosexuality. On this last note, Liz indicated that many people have appreciated that the gay character of Angel hasn’t pushed away his masculinity aside to take over the "loquita syndrome". Many people have celebrated and have identified tremendously with the character and how he handles his homosexuality with dignity and grace.

The major hurdle to get Sexto Sentido on the air on the most popular television station and become the most popular weekly show was getting on the air using mainstream resources such as sponsors and the like. The next season will have a character with aids in its storyline and the organization is using the video for educational purposes to raise funds for making that possible. Our interview goes into the Spanish mode, with our exclusive interview with the co-creator Virginia Lacayo. This I what she had to say:

VL: La televisión es el medio más masivo de todos los medios y en América Latina tiene un poder increíble. Las telenovelas más exitosas lo que hace es que se paraliza el país por la telenovela; los personajes se convierten en casi miembros de su familia. Si en la telenovela tiene contenido social y nacional, pues el impacto es mucho mayor. La novela está dirigida a jóvenes ya que el 72% de la población es menor de 28 años. Aún estoy en el grupo hasta el año que viene, que ya no formaré parte de las estadística, pues cumplo 29 años.

VL: Todos por igual reaccionaron particularmente la iglesia y cierto grupo conservador. Es una lucha ideológica y grande.

VL: Hay muchas formas en la audiencia más allá de los ratings. En el programa de radio es una vía importante ya que el público tiene cinco días para reaccionar. Hacemos giras en las escuelas con los actores para crear grupos de discusión que han sido un éxito. El primer "fan club" oficial de la serie fue creado por un televidente y nos invitaron a participar y no al revés.

OB: El título de la telenovela, ¿de dónde viene?

VL: Tratamos de dar desde punto de genero y generacional. Queremos presentar alternativas y no dictar como adulto lo que hay que hacer. Buscar tu propia sabiduría que viene de adentro y no de la parte aprendida;de ahí que venga el título. Queríamos revindicar esa sabiduría que hay en todos, pero muy en particular en la juventud.

Virginia nos sigue comentando además lo siguiente. "El Sexto Sentido, presentamos una realidad que toda persona latinoamericana puede identificarse aunque son bastantes universales. La violencia doméstica, la discriminación de ser homosexual o lesbiana, las violaciones, la maternidad en la adolescencia, conflictos con autoridad, en fin, muchos, muchos más temas. Por ello nos encantaría poder transmitir la misma en todos los países latinoamericanos."

El mensaje a la comunidad LGBTT en Puerto Rico, según Virginia Lacayo, es el siguiente: en un país como el de Nicaragua que no tiene las grandes bendiciones que tiene Puerto Rico como una industria televisiva, piensen que se puede hacer cosas de impacto real como un programa como éste.

Y estén atentos en las próximas temporadas vienen más y más sorpresas con los personajes que hará llorar, reír y celebrar la vida como debe ser. Nos despedimos de Virginia, de Liz y María con un gran sentido de orgullo por su—SEXTO SENTIDO. No se la pueden perder. Una telenovela de impacto y de conciencia.
